Although compared to the whole of last year, we have a total of fewer open fires, in this firefighting season we record more fires and three times more burned area

According to the data collected by the Fire Brigade Operations Center of the Croatian Fire Brigade, from the beginning of the year to August 12, 3,937 open fires were recorded in the Republic of Croatia, which is 18.42% less than last year, when 4,826 fires were recorded. In the same period, 18,834 ha were burned, which is 52.14% less than in 2020, when 39,356 ha were burned.

However, in the period from June 21, which was the beginning of the main effort of the firefighting season, to August 12, 2021, we recorded 1175 open space fires, while in the same period in 2020, 806 were recorded, which is an increase of 45.78%. 347.03% more area was burned in the mentioned period this year - 6540 ha, while last year 1463 ha were burned.

The increase in the number of fires in this firefighting season is the result of a long dry and hot period
If we take into account the situation on the coast, from the beginning of the year to August 12, 2327 fires were recorded, which is 31.26% less than last year, when 3385 fires were recorded. In the same period, 11,857 ha were burned, which is 65.75% less than in 2020, when 34,616 ha were burned.

In the period from June 21 to August 12, 2021, we recorded 626 open fires on the coast, while in the same period in 2020, 529 were recorded, which is an increase of 18.34%. A larger area was burned in the mentioned period this year - 5496 ha, while last year 1192 ha were burned, which is an increase of 361.07%.
